Sara Hughes, Colby College

 

Colby College women’s tennis player Sara Hughes (South Burlington, Vt.), the 2005 Female Sportsmanship Award nominee from the NESCAC, finished her tennis career as a three-time All-American.

Hughes also earned NESCAC Spring All-Academic honors in all three years of eligibility. She also earned Sportsmanship honors for NESCAC women’s tennis.

Hughes had a 79-34 overall record the past three years, including 32 wins during her sophomore season when she earned All-America doubles honors and was Co-NESCAC Player of the Year. Hughes and doubles partner Britt Palmedo finished ninth in doubles in Division III in 2003.

In the 2004-05 season, Hughes and doubles partner Allison Dunn finished 10th in Division III in the final doubles rankings. Dunn and Hughes were runners-up at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships this past fall. The pair then placed third at the ITA National Small College Championships in Florida in October.

Hughes, who finished the year ranked 17th nationally in singles, had a doubles record of 17-7 and an overall record of 29-15 in 2004-05.

Hughes finished 14th in the country in the final Division III singles rankings in 2003-04, while Dunn and Hughes were 16th nationally in doubles.
