Tiffany Kornegay, Tufts University
Tiffany Kornegay, the NESCAC women's basketball
Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, helped the Tufts Jumbos
surpass expectations last season. After two straight conference
tournament quarterfinal exits, and the loss of all-time leading
scorer Colleen Hart in 2011, Tufts was projected to be in the
middle of the pack in the NESCAC.
Instead, the Jumbos went 8-2 in the league for second place and
advanced to the final in the conference tournament. Their 23-7
record is the second-most wins in team history, they hosted an NCAA
Regional for the first time in the program's history, and they made
the program's second appearance in the NCAA sectional round.
Kornegay, a 5-6 guard, ranked second in the conference with 8.7
rebounds per game and made 2.47 steals per contest. She scored at a
7.7 points-per-game pace and led the Jumbos with 85 assists (2.8
per game).
In the fall 2012, Kornegay will be working at Choate Rosemary Hall
(Wallingford, Conn.) as a psychology teacher and will also be
helping out with the girls' basketball team, as well as the track
& field team. During the summer she taught psychology in
Choate's Summer Program, which helped her get acclimated with the
school and its students.
"Working here for the summer has been a wonderful experience," she
said. "I am an advisor and teacher to students who live all across
the United States and around the world. By doing this, I am being
introduced to new cultures and learning styles. I really look
forward to the academic year."
Kornegay is also a talented lyricist. She has been writing music
since the summer prior to her freshman year at Tufts. Under the
name LethaL Flo, she has lyrically composed and recorded over 30
songs.
"Writing music is something I will always do," she said. "Listening
to my music helps me remember and reflect on the good times and
bad, but mostly good. I think of it as my audio journal that helps
me keep track of important people and events that took place in my
life."
