Middlebury Grabs 14-1 Victory Over Tufts in Baseball Championship

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Middlebury College baseball team used a seven-run, 10-hit fifth-frame to blow open a close game and cruise to a 14-1 win over Tufts in Game Two of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday morning at Colby College. The Panthers (22-9) advance to the winner's bracket, where they will face Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon in Game Four. Tufts will play Williams in an elimination game on Saturday afternoon in Waterville.
The Panthers ripped a NESCAC Tournament-record 21 hits in the game to beat the Jumbos for the fifth time this season. Leading 3-0 when play was suspended last evening, Tufts cut the lead to 3-1 on a Brian Casey run scored in the top of the fifth. But the Panthers answered by batting around in the bottom of the frame and taking a 10-1 lead.
Gabe Broughton (4-4, three runs, 2 RBI's) and Nick Lefeber (4-5, 3 RBI's, 3 runs) led the Middlebury attack. Adam Telian was tagged with the loss, working three innings, allowing seven earned runs. Steve Shortle picked up the win for Middlebury, allowing one run in six innings pitched.
