2006 Baseball Players of the Week

May 15, 2006
John Lanahan, Middlebury
(Sophomore, 3B - Jacksonville, Fla.)
Lanahan hit a torrid .786 during the 2006 NESCAC Baseball Championship over the weekend, leading Middlebury to its first-ever conference title in its first appearance in the tournament. The sophomore scored six runs, while hitting a double and a key two-run homer in the title game against Tufts on Sunday. Lanahan also drove in eight runs and had an on-base percentage of .812 through the three tournament games.

Ricky Leclerc, Bowdoin
(Senior, Pitcher/DH - Manchester, N.H.)
Leclerc stole the show on Senior day in Brunswick, hitting a pair of home runs and earning a win on the mound to help lift Bowdoin to a sweep over Middlebury on Saturday. Leclerc reached base in seven of his eight at-bats, hitting a solo homer and scoring three runs in game one of the twinbill. During game two, Leclerc went 2-for-3 with a two-run shot while tossing seven innings from the mound, allowing one earned run on five hits and three strikeouts.

Paul Morgan, Williams
(Junior, Shortstop - Essex Junction, Vt.)
Morgan batted .545 (12-for-22), scoring five runs while driving in seven. Four of his 12 hits were for extra bases with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. From the field, he committed only two errors on 25 opportunities, helping to turn two double plays. On the season, Morgan is hitting .423 with five home runs and 35 RBIs. Williams has won its last 11 outings.

Chris McCann, Bowdoin
(Junior, Shortstop - Hopkinton, Mass.)
McCann continued his outstanding play of late, leading the Polar Bears to a school-record 11-straight victories after a 4-0 week that included a sweep of Wesleyan on Saturday. The leadoff hitter for Bowdoin, McCann sparked the squad with a .565 average (13-for-23), a team-high nine runs, an on-base percentage of .600, and a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases. McCann is two stolen bases shy of the single-season record at Bowdoin.

Jim O'Leary, Tufts
(Senior, Centerfield - North Easton, Mass.)
O’Leary hit .625 (10-for-16) with six doubles, a home run, six RBIs, three runs scored, three walks and a stolen base in a 4-0 week for the Jumbos. In a three-game sweep of Trinity that clinched a Tufts berth in the NESCAC tournament, O’Leary was 7-for-12 with five RBIs and four doubles. His single in the bottom of the eighth in the first game on Friday capped a 7-6 comeback win from a 6-1 deficit. Earlier in the week, O’Leary went 3-for-3 with a home run against UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday.

(Sophomore, Third Baseman - Jacksonville, Fla.)
Lanahan was red-hot from the dish last week for the Panthers, going 9-for-16 for a .562 average. Through five games last week, Lanahan knocked three doubles and a homer, while scoring four runs and driving in 12. He had an on-base percentage of .600, while slugging at a .938 clip.

April 10, 2006
Matt Stafford, Trinity
(Sophomore, Outfielder/DH - Plymouth, Mass.)
Stafford powered Trinity to three wins in four games, including two wins in three tries at NESCAC East rival Colby. He was 6-for-13 (.462 avg) with seven runs scored and eight RBIs, along with collecting four walks for an .588 on-base percentage. Stafford picked up a double and homered twice in Trinity’s 12-8 win at Colby on Saturday.

Brendan Powers, Amherst
(Freshman, 3B - Walpole, Mass.)
Powers erupted for 12 RBIs last week, going 6-for-14 at the plate (.429) with seven runs scored, a double, his first two collegiate home runs and five walks in a 3-0-1 week for the Jeffs. He had a streak of reaching base safely in 11 consecutive at-bats at one point during the week, and his homers consisted of a three-run shot against Westfield St. on Thursday and a grand slam against Wesleyan on Friday.

Bryan McDavitt, Tufts
(Junior, 1B - Holden, Mass.)
McDavitt hit .625 (10-for-16) with eight runs scored, five RBIs, four walks (.700 OBP), three doubles and three stolen bases in a 4- 0 week for Tufts. In the three-game series to open NESCAC East play against Bates, McDavitt was 8-for-13 (.615) with six runs scored and four RBIs. He was also 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI at Mass Maritime on Wednesday.

(Senior, RHP - Hinsdale, Ill.)
Cox tossed seven innings of shutout ball on Sunday, allowing two hits and striking out nine batters while taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning during a 13-0 win over Fredonia St.

Angus Shaller, Amherst
(Freshman, Shortstop - Leucadia, Calif.)
The rookie Schaller had a strong start to his Amherst career over the weekend, smashing a three-run homer in his first at bat en route to a 6-for-9 performance for the week-end. Schaller had two home runs, seven RBIs, and a double.
