HARWICH, Mass. - The Williams College baseball team's season came to an end Saturday night as the Ephs were eliminated from the NCAA Division III New England Regional by top-seeded Wheaton College, 7-1.
The Ephs finished a stellar season with a 27-10 record.
"I told them after the game it was a great season," Williams head coach Bill Barrale said. "It took the top-seeded team in this tournament, the top team in New England, to knock us out. If we were going to lose, I wanted it to be to a better team and tonight, they were better."
Lyons' left-hander Josh Moore set a school record by striking out 16 Ephs in the game. Wheaton advanced to play Keene State in an elimination game later Saturday night.
Wheaton got on top early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Adam Laplante hit a two-out, two-run home run to left field off Williams starter Matt Gustafson.
Wheaton extended its lead to 3-0 when Scott Guillerault ripped a solo home run down the left-field line leading off the top of the second inning.
Williams senior Sean Gleeson cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when hit lined an RBI-single into center field to score James DiCosmo, who reached on an infield single. With runners on second and third and two outs, Moore struck out Eph junior Max Pinto to end the inning.
Williams had five hits in the loss, three of the infield variety. Moore pitched a complete-game, allowing the five hits, walking no one and striking out 16. He struck out the side in the ninth to conclude the game.
"Tonight we got caught by a hot pitcher," Eph senior Paul Morgan said. "He was really throwing the ball well, he was throwing a lot of strikes and he had great command. That happens sometimes in baseball and you just tip your cap."
Wheaton added two runs to its lead in the fifth when Lyons' lead-off batter Travis Anthoine smacked a two-run homer to left off Gustafson for a 5-1 advantage. Gustafson took the loss, going four-plus innings and allowing five hits and five runs, all earned. He walked one and struck out three.
Cory Catelli threw four effective innings of relief for the Ephs, allowing three hits and two runs. He walked one and fanned four. Sam Tuttle finished up for the Ephs, allowing one hit in one innings with two strikeouts.
Five different Ephs -- DiCosmo, Gleeson, Pinto, Chad Brown and Morgan -- had one hit. Anthoine was 3 for 5 for Wheaton and Laplante was 3 for 4 with two RBis. Guillerault was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
