CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Colby's Nick Kmetz received the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Award for week 10 of the 2009 football season. Joining Kmetz in receiving honors was Rhode Island's Shawn Leonard. Both players received their plaques Wednesday afternoon at the New England Football Writers' Luncheon, hosted at Harvard's Dillon Field House.
Kmetz, a sophomore signal caller out of Laurel, Del., tossed four touchdown passes to lead the Mules to a 34-31 victory over Tufts.
Trailing 21-7 in the third quarter,
Kmetz put on an aerial show by connecting with three different
receivers for four scores. All four touchdown strikes went for 26
yards or longer. Kmetz finished the day with 273 yards passing,
completing 16 of 26 attempts. He also rushed 17 times for 53 yards
to give him 326 all-purpose yards in the game. Kmetz currently
ranks third in the New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) in total offense (230.4 yards per game), fourth in passing
yardage (202.1), and fourth in pass efficiency (112.3). Kmetz was
named the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
The weekly function is the nation's oldest organized luncheon and
is in its 81st season.
