2002 Field Hockey Championship Field Set

HARTFORD, Conn. - Bowdoin College earned the top seed and a first round bye in the NESCAC Field Hockey Championship. Bowdoin tied atop the NESCAC standings with Williams at 7-2 but earned the number one seed having defeated Williams in regular season play. Bowdoin, who finished the regular season 11-3 overall, will host the semifinals and finals on Saturday-Sunday, November 9-10.

Williams (7-2 NESCAC, 11-3 overall) will host seventh seeded Amherst (4-5 NESCAC, 7-7 overall). Amherst defeated Williams 1-0 on October 26th.

Middlebury (6-3 NESCAC, 9-5 overall) will be the third seed and will host sixth seed Bates (5-4 NESCAC, 7-7 overall). Middlebury defeated Bates 2-0 in their first meeting of the year.

Fifth seed Colby (5-4 NESCAC, 10-4 overall) will travel to fourth seed Wesleyan (5-4 NESCAC, 9-5 overall) in other first round action.

Wesleyan earned the highest seed of the three teams tied for fourth at 5-4 through a predetermined tiebreaking procedure. While Colby, Wesleyan and Bates tied in head-to-head competition, Wesleyan and Colby had a better record against the top four seeds, including all teams tied for that position. Wesleyan defeated Colby 2-0 in an earlier meeting this year.

The top seven teams qualify for the NESCAC Championship. First round games will be played on Sunday, November 3 at 1:00 pm. First round winners will advance to the semifinals at Bowdoin on Saturday, November 9. Teams are reseeded entering the semifinal round with number one seed Bowdoin playing the lowest remaining seed. The NESCAC Champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.
