Williams Edges Amherst 3-1 in First Round of Field Hockey Championship

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Williams scored the first three goals of Sunday's first round game against Amherst in the 2007 NESCAC Field Hockey Championship, as the Ephs went on to win 3-1 over the Jeffs. The win vaults Williams into the semifinals against top-seeded Bowdoin next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Brunswick, Maine.

Williams forward Anne de Sanit Phalle scored the first goal of the game with 2:29 left in the first half, assisted by Meighan McGowan. McGowan then scored off the penalty corner from Rebecca Gilbert with 10:24 left in the 2nd half. Cary Bearn scored with 6:45 left in the game, putting the Ephs up, 3-0.

Amherst's Catherine Calvert scored with 5:12 left in the game bringing the final score to 3-1.

Bethany Baker played in goal for the Ephs making 2 saves, while Kathleen Boucher made 6 saves for the Jeffs. Williams had 9 penalty corners to Amherst's 6, and the Ephs out shot the Jeffs, 11-6.
