GRANTHAM, Pa. - Senior forward Amanda Greene (Thorofare, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal on a hard shot from the right side to lead Rowan to a 5-4, overtime win over Trinity in the second round of the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament this afternoon at Messiah College.
Trinity closes its best season since 1998 with a 13-5 record, while the Profs, who trailed, 4-0, 24 minutes into the game, improve to 15-4 and advance the NCAA Quarterfinals against Messiah College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Messiah defeated Easter in the other NCAA Second Round game here this morning.
Trinity, which had won two games at this site in 1998 to reach the NCAA Final Four in its last time in the tournament, appeared to be on the same track this weekend, scoring four times on five shots in the opening 24:02 of the contest. Bantam senior co-captain forward Karli Del Rossi (Mantua, N.J.) redirected a hard shot by junior forward Carrie Wolcott (Hamilton, Mass.) 5:18 into the game for Trinity's first goal, and freshman Payson Sword (Princeton, N.J.) blasted in the first of her two goals on a penalty corner with 23:53 on the clock. Trinity scored again on a corner, as Sword caught Rowan off guard by passing right to sophomore Robyn Williams (Bualwaye, Zimbabwe) instead of firing at the goal, and Williams knocked the ball in for a 3-0 Bantam lead at the 16:09 mark of the first half. Wolcott notched her third assist with a pass from the center to the right to Sword, who beat Prof freshman goalie Lisa Apt (Mays Landing, N.J.) for a 4-0 Bantam advantage. Trinity freshman goalie Gina Dinallo (West Hartford, Conn.) made four tough saves in the first 20 minutes, before Rowan got on the board with a one-timed shot by sophomore forward Lauren Ross (Gloucester City, N.J.) with 8:41 left before the break.
With torrential downpour ensuing in the opening minutes of the second half, Ross struck again on a Prof penalty corner to cut the Trinity lead to two just 2:32 after halftime. The rain halted play for 20 minutes soon after Ross' second goal, but the Profs came back from a short rest with their third unanswered score, as Greene assisted senior back Kelly Angstadt (Sewell, N.J.) on a shot past Dinallo from the right side with 17:10 remaining in regulation. Rowan took advantage of a penalty stroke opportunity, after a Trinity foul in front of the cage, 2:45 later and Angstadt lifted the ball over Dinallo's right shoulder to tie the game at 4-4. Del Rossi shot just left of the post on a driving shot from the right side with 10 minutes on the clock for the closest Trinity chance before the game went into overtime.
In the extra frame, Del Rossi and
sophomore Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, Mass.) were both stopped on
nice saves by Apt, who had been pulled from the game after
Trinity's fourth goal but inserted back into the game after the
break, while Dinallo dove left and quickly reached toward the post
to stop a Rowan penalty stroke try 7:46 into the overtime. Greene
tallied the clincher 10 seconds later, however, to end the Bantam
season on a heartbreaking loss. Dinallo finished with 14 saves,
while Apt had three stops.
