MEDFORD, Mass. - Tufts University field hockey coach Tina McDavitt is the 2009 Dita/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) New England West Region Coach of the Year, it was announced today.

In her sixth season as coach of the Jumbos, McDavitt led Tufts to its first NESCAC title. When the team made its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, she guided the squad to the national semifinals for the second straight year. Unfortunately, McDavitt was unable to coach the team in the game due to an emergency appendectomy that she had on the day before the game. Tufts lost 1-0 to eventual national champion Salisbury.

The 2009 Jumbos finished 18-2 overall and 8-1 in NESCAC. The team featured three All-American players, the NFHCA New England West Region Player of the Year, five All-Region players, the conference Player of the Year and five All-NESCAC honorees. One of McDavitt's players also earned the NCAA Elite 88 award for having the highest grade point average among the teams at the field hockey "final four."

McDavitt was the NESCAC Coach of the Year for the second straight season this fall. Tufts was ranked among the top 10 in the NCAA Division III Statistics for both goals per game (3.9) and goals against average (0.60).

The 2009 Dita/NFHCA Division III National Coach of the Year will be announced at the NFHCA Coaches Recognition Luncheon to be held on Friday, January 8, 2010 in Richmond, Virginia.

In six years on the job, McDavitt has a .745 winning percentage with a 79-27 record. She is assisted by Dani Ryder and Craig Rowe.
