WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Hamilton College, riding performances by
senior Brian Williams and first year Chris Pike, captured the
abbreviated 2003 NESCAC Men’s Golf Championship at Taconic
Golf Club at Williams College. The Continentals’ combined
score of 311 edged out rival Amherst, who finished one stroke back
at 312 in the tournament that was shortened to one day because of
torrential rains Sunday morning. Defending champion and host
Williams College finished third with 318, while Middlebury College
at 321 and Trinity College at 325 finished fourth and fifth
respectively.
Individually, Williams fired a round 70 under difficult conditions on the 6,640 yard, par 71 course for the day’s low score. His performance earned him his second straight NESCAC Player of the Year award, while his teammate Pike finished second with a 3 over par 74 to give the Continentals just enough room for victory. Rounding out the NESCAC first team were Amherst’s Sean Jules (76) and Mike Valentine (78) and Williams’ Bryan Harmon (77). Pike also captured NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors.
Hamilton’s victory gave them their first NESCAC title since 1998 and ended Williams’ consecutive title streak at three.
