BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College Athletic Department recently announced that Marissa O'Neil has been named head coach of its women's golf program.

O'Neil, who also serves as head coach of Bowdoin's women's ice hockey team, assumes the role from Gerry Caron, who will transition to an assistant coach position following two years at the helm of the program.

A 2005 graduate of Bowdoin, O'Neil was a two-sport standout as a student and earned the school's Lucy L. Shulman Award, given to Bowdoin's most outstanding female athlete, as a senior.

A field hockey and ice hockey player while an undergrad, O'Neil graduated from Bowdoin with a bachelor's degree in Sociology. She also owns a master's degree in Sport Management from UMass Amherst.

One of the school's emerging programs, the women's golf team is coming off a fantastic 2011 campaign that saw the team win the State Championship and win its home invitational, the Bowdoin Blast.

The Polar Bears will open their season by hosting the 2012 edition of the Bowdoin Blast at Brunswick Golf Club on September 8-9.
