2010-11 Men's Basketball Players of the Week

Ryan Sharry, Middlebury
(Junior, Forward - Braintree, Mass.)
Sharry posted back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 14.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, as he helped the Panthers win the 2011 NESCAC Men’s Basketball Championship over the weekend. During Saturday’s semifinal match against Amherst, Sharry had 15 points and 13 boards as Middlebury overcame an 18-point deficit to win, 67-61. He followed on Sunday with 14 points and 12 rebounds in a 63-54 decision over Williams, a victory which gave the Panthers their second conference crown in the past three years and tied the program mark for wins in a season.

Luke MacDougall, Trinity
(Senior, Forward - Baldwinsville, N.Y.)
MacDougall scored a game-high 20 points and added five rebounds, two assists, and a steal to lead the Bantams past Tufts on Saturday, 70-47, in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NESCAC Men’s Basketball Championship. He made 8-of-13 shots from the floor (.615) and 3-of-4 from long range in just 28 minutes of work. The victory put Trinity back in the semifinals for the first time since their title run in 2008.

James Wang, Williams
(Junior, Guard - Sydney, Australia)
Wang led his squad to an undefeated mark in NESCAC play for the second-straight year over the weekend, scoring 26.5 points per game in victories over Trinity and Amherst. He made 20-of-34 from the floor (.588) and 9-of-16 from three-point range (.563) along with 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per outing. After managing 20 points in Friday’s 86-60 win over the Bantams, Wang dropped a career-high 33 points, 24 coming in the first half, on 13-of-21 shooting (.619) in a 74-70 decision over the rival Lord Jeffs on Saturday.

Conor Meehan, Amherst
(Senior, Guard - Meriden, Conn.)
Meehan averaged 22.0 points per game, going 13-for-18 from the floor (.722), 5-for-6 from long range (.833), and a perfect 13-for-13 from the line as he led the Lord Jeffs to back-to-back NESCAC victories. During Friday’s 96-77 win over Tufts, Meehan had 23 points, missing only two shots all night, and also chipped in five assists, four steals and a rebound. On Saturday in a 74-68 decision over Bates, Meehan had 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting, grabbed four rebounds, and dished the ball four times. He moved into seventh on the program’s all-time assist list (320).

Aaron Toomey, Amherst
(Freshman, Guard - Greensboro, N.C.)
Toomey came off the bench for the Lord Jeffs and averaged 19.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 rebounds over a pair of NESCAC wins last week. He made 10-of-15 from the floor (.667), 5-of-6 from three-point range, and 13-for-14 from the foul line (.929). In only 19 minutes of Friday’s 82-49 decision over Colby, Toomey collected 18 points on 5-of-5 shooting, going 3-for-3 from long range. He followed on Saturday with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals in a 103-85 victory against Bowdoin.
   
Troy Whittington, Williams
(Senior, Forward - Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Whittington averaged a double-double during a 2-0 week for the Ephs, scoring 21.5 points per game and hauling down 10.5 rebounds. During Tuesday’s 84-61 victory at Skidmore, Whittington had a career-best 28 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the floor and an 8-of-9 performance at the foul line while securing 10 rebounds. He added 15 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday, 10 on the defensive glass, as Williams handed Middlebury its first loss of the season, 69-64. He finished the week 16-for-22 from the field (.727).

Amauris Quezada, Tufts
(Junior, Guard - New York, N.Y.)
Quezada averaged 21.5 points per game on 16-of-22 shooting from the floor (.727) and a blistering 9-of-11 performance from long range (.818) to help the Jumbos pick up their first two NESCAC wins this season, both of which came on the road in Maine. On Friday at Bowdoin, Quezada was 4-for-4 from three-point range and 5-for-8 overall (.625), scoring 15 points in a 64-55 victory. He followed on Saturday with a career-high 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting (.786) to lead Tufts past Colby, 78-66. For the week, he also added in six rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Nolan Thompson, Middlebury
(Sophomore, Guard - Akron, Ohio)
Thompson led the undefeated Panthers to a pair of NESCAC victories during the opening weekend of league play, scoring 24.5 points per game on 19-of-27 shooting (.704). Thompson opened the weekend with a career-best 27 points, hitting 11-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-6 from long range, in Friday’s 79-63 decision over Tufts. On Saturday, Thompson had 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting (.667) as part of a 78-65 victory at Bates. For the weekend, Thompson made 7-of-9 three-pointers (.778) and averaged 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals.

Aaron Toomey, Amherst
(Freshman, Guard - Greensboro, N.C.)
Toomey averaged 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game during a 2-0 week for the Lord Jeffs against NESCAC rivals Wesleyan and Williams. On Wednesday in an 87-74 victory over the Cardinals, Toomey had 22 points, three rebounds, and four assists. He followed on Saturday with 21 points, a career-best eight rebounds, and five assists in an 92-89 overtime victory against the previously-unbeaten Ephs. For the week, Toomey hit 14-of-24 shots from the floor (.583) and 11-of-13 from the foul line (.846).

Will Hanley, Bowdoin
(Junior, Forward - New Canaan, Conn.)
Hanley matched a career-high in scoring during Monday’s 78-70 win at Plymouth St., collecting 29 points and adding in 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Hanley shot an impressive 13-for-18 from the floor (.722) and made 3-of-5 free throw attempts. He also had three assists and four blocks while playing all 40 minutes.
   
Amauris Quezada, Tufts
(Junior, Guard - New York, N.Y.)
Quezada garnered Tournament MVP honors at the Morris Cregger New Year’s Classic at Roanoke, averaging 17.5 points over two Jumbo victories. Quezada led the way with 20 points in Sunday’s 90-72 decision against Roanoke, then had 15 points in Monday’s 71-56 win over Emory & Henry. He made 8-of-16 attempts from the floor and went 15-for-18 from the foul line (.833), adding in eight steals, seven assists, and five rebounds.

Troy Whittington, Williams
(Senior, Forward - Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Whittington averaged a double-double during a 2-0 week for the Ephs, scoring 24.0 points and grabbing 15.5 rebounds per game. He made 14-of-22 from the floor (.636), hit 20-of-24 free throw attempts (.833), and added in three assists, two blocks, and two steals. In Tuesday’s 79-56 win over Hamilton, Whitting tied Williams’ single-game record for rebounds with a career-best 21 and matched the figure with 21 points. He followed on Saturday with his fifth double-double of the season in a 83-60 victory at Springfield, pouring in a career-high 27 points and hauling down 10 boards.

James Wang, Williams
(Junior, Guard - Sydney, Australia)
Wang averaged 20.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game in helping the Ephs remain undefeated this season over three outings last week. He made 21-of-36 attempts from the floor (.583), 13-of-19 from long range (.684), and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. In Tuesday’s 89-73 win at Rensselaer, Wang had a game-high 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting, going 8-for-12 from three-point range, and grabbed nine rebounds. During Saturday’s 92-42 win at Vassar, Wang hit every shot he took, going 5-for-5 from the floor, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, and 4-4 from the line for 16 points.

Brian Ellis, Bates
(Senior, Forward - Braintree, Mass.)
Ellis scored the most points by a Bobcat in seven years with a career-high 33 during Tuesday’s 76-72 setback to Southern Maine. He went 12-for-16 from the floor (.750), 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Ellis also grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists, and had a steal. He moved to 27th on Bates’ all-time scoring list, scoring 1,053 points over his career.

Conor Meehan, Amherst
(Senior, Guard - Meriden, Conn.)
Meehan was named MVP of the Ken Wright Invitational as he led the Lord Jeffs to the tournament title over the weekend. He averaged 20.5 points on 14-for-28 shooting (.500) along with 7.0 rebounds per game in wins over Maine-Farmington and Castleton. Against the Beavers on Friday evening, Meehan dropped a career-high 28 points, as he was 8-for-18 from the floor and 11-for-14 from the foul line in a 90-89 overtime victory. He also had four assists, three steals, and a block over the two games.
   
Luke MacDougall, Trinity
(Senior, Forward - Baldwinsville, N.Y.)
MacDougall earned MVP honors at the Golden Bears Hoop Classic at Western New England, leading the Bantams to the tournament title with victories against Norwich and Lesley. He posted 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, going 13-for-25 from the field (.520) and 6-for-12 (.500) from three-point range. In Sunday’s 79-56 victory over Lesley, MacDougall went 7-for-12 from the floor and 5-for-6 from behind the arc, tying for the game high with 21 points. He also added five assists and three steals while not turning the ball over on the weekend.
