SALEM, Mass. – Bowdoin College men's ice hockey coach Terry Meagher became the seventh coach in Division III history to reach 400 career victories in a 6-3 win over Salem State on Friday evening. The victory gives the Polar Bears (7-2-0) their fourth-straight Salem State Holiday Classic crown while the Vikings fall to 5-5-0 this season.
Meagher, who has accumulated a record of 400-186-40, is in his 25th season at the helm of the Bowdoin men's ice hockey program. He is the 31st coach in NCAA hockey history to reach the plateau.
Bowdoin scored three times in the third period to win Friday's contest. Mike Corbelle notched the go-ahead tally off a feed from Colin MacCormack just 5:36 into the frame to give the Polar Bears a 4-3 edge. Rookie goal-scoring phenom Ryan Leary found the back of the net for the second time on the night at 8:45 before Corbelle sealed the win with a goal at 19:20.
Bowdoin trailed 2-1 after the opening period as Salem's Jeff Tellier sandwiched a pair of goals around one from Polar Bear Kyle Shearer-Hardy. Bowdoin took the lead after consecutive scores from Mike Westerman and Leary in the second period, only to see the Vikings tie the game shortly before intermission on a score from Alex Molnar.
