Trinity Edges Connecticut College 3-1 in Men's Ice Hockey Quarterfinals

HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore goalkeeper Wesley Vesprini (Lexington, Mass.) made 18 saves to lead No. 4-seeded Trinity to a 3-1 win over No. 5-seeded Connecticut College in their quarterfinal round game of the 2009 NESCAC Men's Ice Hockey Championship this afternoon at Williams Rink. Trinity will face the No. 1-seeded Amherst, who topped the No. 8-seeded Tufts 4-1 today to advance in the tournament. Trinity, which won the NESCAC Championship in 2008, will be on the road for the Amherst match next week.

Trinity sophomore forward Egor Petrov ((Novokuznetsk, Russia) gave the Bantams the lead midway through the first period and Trinity opened the second period with a power play goal from senior co-captain Ryan Masucci (Winthrop, Mass.) for a 2-0 lead. Later in the second period, Connecticut College freshman Julien Boutet (Amos, Quebec) converted on a power to bring his team within a goal at 2-1.

In the third, Connecticut College took the first five shots of the period, but momentum shifted back in Trinity’s favor when junior Richard Hollstein (Pembroke, Mass.) capitalized on a perfect pass from senior Riley Hicks (Calgary, Alberta) with a one-timer that sealed the 3-1 triumph for Trinity. Connecticut College junior goalkeeper Greg Parker (Trenton, Ontario) made 16 saves before leaving the game due to injury with just over five minutes remaining.
