2088 NESCAC Men's Lacrosse Players of the Week

Michael Gerbush, Williams
(Junior, Goalkeeper - Glen Head, N.Y.)
Gerbush combined for a .674 save percentage over two games to help the Ephs win the 2008 NESCAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship, the first title in program history. During Saturday’s semifinal at Middlebury, Gerbush stopped 16 shots in an 11-10 overtime win for Williams. On Sunday, he made 13 saves in a 9-4 victory against Bowdoin for the 2008 NESCAC crown.

Grayson Connors, Wesleyan
(Senior, Attacker - Princeton Junction, N.J.)
Connors had 11 goals and two assists during a 2-0 week for the Cardinals. At Bates on Saturday afternoon, Connors came within one goal of the Wesleyan single-game record with seven, finishing the 14-10 win with eight points. Against rival Trinity in the first round of the 2008 NESCAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship Sunday afternoon, Connors had four goals and an assist during an 11-5 victory.

Gerbush posted a .730 save percentage over two victories in net for the Ephs last week. Tuesday afternoon, Gerbush stopped 14 shots and allowed only four goals in a 13-4 win for Williams over previously-unbeaten Keene St. On Saturday, Gerbush made 13 saves in a 14-6 decision againstTrinity that helped keep the Ephs’ NESCAC playoff hopes alive.

Connors had 10 points on seven goals and three assists during a 2-0 week for the Cardinals. Wednesday afternoon against Amherst, Connors tallied four goals and an assist to help Wesleyan overcome a 4-1 deficit to win by a 9-8 score. On Saturday, Connors netted three goals and added two assists, as his two goals in the third quarter capped a 7-0 Cardinal run that brought his team back from a 7-3 deficit to a 10-7 lead en route to a 13-12 Wesleyan victory over Colby.

Mike Giordano, Bowdoin
(Senior, Attacker - Washington, D.C.)
Giordano led the Polar Bears in scoring during two close victories last week, tallying a total of seven goals. Tuesday afternoon against Springfield, Giordano had three goals, including what proved to be the decisive goal in a 9-8 win. On Saturday, Giordano scored a game-high four goals in a 10-8 decision over Trinity. Giordano is second for Bowdoin in scoring with a team-high 17 goals and four assists for 21 points though nine games.

Mike Borrero, Wesleyan
(Junior, Goalkeeper - Bayport, N.Y.)
Borrero backboned the Cardinals to two victories last week, posting an .806 save percentage and a 3.12 goals against average over 115 minutes of action. Borrero opened the week on Tuesday against Merchant Marine with 14 saves and two goals allowed in an 8-2 victory. Saturday afternoon, Borrero stopped 11 shots while giving up four goals as Wesleyan overcame a 4-1 deficit in the second quarter by scoring 12 straight goals en route to a 13-5 victory. 

March 24, 2008
Mike Stone, Middlebury
(Junior, Midfielder - Boston, Mass.)
Stone scored seven goals, including Saturday’s double-overtime winner at Bowdoin, and added four assists during a 2-0 week for the Panthers. Wednesday afternoon at Springfield, Stone had two goals and three assists during a 12-6 victory. On Saturday, Stone led the Middlebury comeback in the fourth quarter with two goals and an assist as part of a five goal, one assist performance in a 12-11 win over the Polar Bears. Stone leads Middlebury with eight goals and eight assists for 16 points through four games.

Alex Palma, Trinity
(Junior, Goalkeeper - Chappaqua, N.Y.)
Palma posted a .729 save percentage during a 2-0 week for the Bantams. On Wednesday, Palma made 11 saves during a 13-6 victory over Western Conn. St. He closed out the week with 16 saves while surrendering only five goals in a 7-5 victory over Bates.

Drew Piekarski, Colby
(Senior, Attack - East Sandwich, Mass.)
Piekarski scored three goals - including the game-winner in double-overtime - during the Mules’ 9-8 victory over Williams on Saturday. Piekarski’s decisive tally helped Colby win a NESCAC opener for the first time since 2002.

Matt Ferrer, Middlebury
(Junior, Attack - Darien, Conn.)
Ferrer started off the 2008 campaign with a career-high five goals in a 14-12 win at Bates on Sunday. Two of his five tallies came during a 5-0 Panther run in the first quarter.
