Bowdoin Upends Amherst in Double-Overtime in Men's Soccer First Round

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team took an improbable 3-2 overtime win in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament this afternoon over Amherst. The Polar Bears advance to the semifinals, where they will face Williams College at Williams next Saturday. Middlebury will play Tufts in the other semifinal game. Gametimes will be announced early next week.
After a scoreless first half, Tim Canon opened the scoring for Amherst at 53:05 and Roger Boulay added a goal at 60:45 as Amherst jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the second half. Bowdoin closed the lead to 2-1 when David Bulow played a back pass to Thomas Bresnehan, who rocketed the ball into the top corner at 68:22. With just over four minutes remaining, Chris Fuller put back a rebound to knot the game at 2-2.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Polar Bears took their first lead of the game in the second OT, at 1:05:34, when a David Bulow shot hit the post and rebounded into the net off an Amherst defender. The goal credited to Bulow was the 32nd of his career, and tied the school record for career goals.
Travis Derr made six saves, while Amherst netminder Bill Orum made five stops in the loss.
