MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Wesleyan sophomore forward Morgan Owen scored five minutes into overtime to lift the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over Bates in the NESCAC men's soccer tournament first round. Wesleyan advances in the NESCAC tournament and will play top-seeded and host Williams College Saturday, Nov. 6 in one semi-final. Middlebury College and Bowdoin College meet in the other semi-final. The championships game is slated for Sunday, Nov. 7 at Williams.

After a scoreless first half, Bates took the lead today on freshman Brent Morin's seventh goal of the year as he battled two Wesleyan defenders for a loose ball outside the Wesleyan zone and beat Wesleyan goalie Dan Penrod with 30 minutes to play. Wesleyan got the equalizer 10 minutes later as senior Mike Ryan took a quick corner kick, passing the ball just 10 yards to sophomore Jared Ashe who moved in from the right flank and found senior Evan Berding on the right post 10 yards out. Berding chipped in his second goal of the year for the 1-1 deadlock.

In overtime, Owen received a through pass to the right side and after running onto the ball and gaining control, took a hard shot from 20 yards out on the right past a diving Bates goalie James Kenly and found the net to the far side for the game winner.
