MOBILE, Ala. - Junior Matt Micheli and senior Trey Meyer of Williams College won the Division III Doubles title at the ITA National Small College Championships over the weekend. The tournament took place at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama and featured regional champions from around the nation.

After holding on for an impressive three-set win over Warren Wood and Joe Dorn of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the semifinals, Micheli and Meyer topped Whitman College's Andrew Le Cava and James Rivers 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 in the finals.

Meyer also took home the doubles title last fall along with senior Bryan Chow.

"Whitman played very tough, but we hung around, made a few adjustments, and finished strong," said Williams head coach Dan Greenberg. "For Trey to win this two years in a row is a real accomplishment and testament to his drive."

With their win, Micheli and Meyer qualified for the event's Super Bowl, which included champions from each division. They faced off against Daniel Regan and Georgi Rumenov of Armstrong Atlantic State University, falling 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Regan and Rumenov went on to win the tournament in straight sets.

The NESCAC was also represented by three players on the women's side of the competition.

After winning their first round match with relative ease, sophomore Rebecca Curran and junior Kara Shoemaker of Williams suffered a heartbreaking 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 setback in the semifinal round of the doubles draw. They rebounded with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Whitman's Alyssa Roberg and Courtney Lawless in the third place match.

Middlebury College sophomore Lok-Sze Leung came up just short in her quest to repeati as singles champion. After dropping just six games in the first two rounds, she fell 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to Emory University's Gabrielle Clark in the finals.

The rivalry between Leung and Clark is now at two wins apiece. Last year, Leung topped Clark in the finals of the ITA Division III Championship before defeating her at a home match in May. Clark returned the favor in the NCAA Championship later that month.
