RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.- The Trinity College women’s first varsity eight crew finished first in the petite final of the NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma this afternoon. The performance, along with a fifth place performance by the Bantam second varsity eight in the same race, gave the Bantams 18 total points in the six-team, three-day regatta. Trinity finished sixth in the overall points standings, just one behind fifth-place Coast Guard and 11 behind NCAA Division III National Champion Ithaca College.
The Bantam first varsity eight had finished 1:30 seconds behind first-place Ithaca in its preliminary heat yesterday, and Smith College won the other heat to fill up the first two spots in the Grand Final. The Bantams were ahead by 59 seconds after a quarter of the race, but fell behind both Ithaca and Williams by the halfway point before overtaking the Williams crew over the final fourth of the course in considerably windy conditions.
With a second chance to reach the Grand Final, Trinity could not overtake second-place Coast Guard or first-place Ithaca and settled for third. The Bantams were forced to enter both of its boats in the petite final, which would allow them the opportunity for no less than 15 points in the final standings with no boat in the Grand Final. The Ithaca Bombers impressively qualified both of its eights for the Grand Final.
