2003 Softball Players of the Week

May 5, 2003
Caroline Grieco, Tufts
(Sophomore, Pitcher - Manasquan, N.J.)
Grieco pitched Tufts to wins in the two most important games of the NESCAC tournament: the first and the last. She shut out Williams, 4-0, in the opener, allowing six hits and no walks in 7 innings. In the championship final, she again stymied the Ephs giving up one run on four hits and one walk in seven innings. For the tournament, she was 2-0 with a 0.50 earned run average, 10 hits and one walk allowed in 14.0 innings.

April 28, 2003
Annette Caswell, Colby
(Sophomore, Centerfielder - Bucksport, Maine)
Caswell raised her batting sixty points to .434 in helping the Mules go 4-0 in NESCAC East games against Bates and Trinity and secure Colby its first NESCAC Tournament bid. Caswell went 8-for-13 and had seven RBI in the wins. She drove in all three runs in a 3-1 first game win over Trinity on Sunday. Caswell also went 3-for-4 with two RBI, including the game-winning RBI in the seventh inning on a double, in a 3-2 opening game win against Bates on Friday.

Kerri McMahon, Williams
(Sophomore, Utility - Denville, N.J.)
McMahon batted .571 in 4 divisional games against Wesleyan and Amherst to lead Williams to the top spot in the NESCAC West. She had eight hits, five RBI and scored five runs including a 4-for-4 game against Wesleyan.

April 21, 2003
Krissie Whiting, Bates
(Senior, OF/P - Contoocook, N.H.)
Batted .500 (13-26) in eight games last week for Bates. She socked three doubles, scored two runs and drove in five more and was also a perfect five-for-five in stolen bases. Whiting is currently on an 11-game hitting streak. She also made one appearance during the week in the circle hurling four innings of three-hit shutout ball. Whiting's RBI single in the seventh against Trinity gave Bates a 4-3 win.

Julie Fox, Tufts
(Junior, Third Base - Willow Springs, Ill.)
In three games, Fox hit .600 (6 for 10) with three home runs, nine runs batted in and four runs scored. She also fielded 14 chances cleanly. Her slugging percentage for the week was 1.500 with 15 total bases. At Bowdoin on Saturday, she hit three home runs and had 8 runs batted in during a double-header. She was 2 for 3 with a home run in game one, then in game two was 3 for 4 with two home runs, seven runs batted in and three runs scored as Tufts clinched a spot in the NESCAC tournament with an 11-5 victory.

April 14, 2003
Lis Drake, Tufts
(Senior, Catcher - Chelmsford, Mass.)
Drake hit .625 (10 for 16) during a 5-1 week for Tufts with eight runs scored, 11 runs batted in, two doubles and three home runs. With a three-run home run in game two at Bridgewater State on Thursday she became the team’s all-time leader in runs batted in. Her slugging percentage for the week was 1.312. She was 2 for 2 with four runs batted in and a home run in an 8-0 win over Colby on Saturday, then went 4-for-6 with three runs, three RBIs and a home run in a double-header sweep of Bates on Sunday.

April 7, 2003
Julia Brenta, Tufts
(Freshman, Pitcher - San Anselmo, Calif.)
Brenta and the Jumbos defeated the #5 team in the nation, #1 in New England, Wheaton College on Sunday, 2-1. She allowed six hits and one run in seven innings of work, striking out three. She retired the first eight hitters as Tufts took a 2-0 lead.

March 31, 2003
Miya Warner, Amherst
(Freshman, Pitcher - Berkley, Calif.)
Rookie Miya Warner is 7-3 with 84 strikeouts and a .148 opponent batting average in 71.2 innings. She has all seven Amherst wins on the season, including a pair of complete game victories in Sunday’s doubleheader sweep over visiting West Division rival Hamilton College. She also spun her first career no-hitter in Thursday’s 3-0 win over Clark University.
