Five-Run Fourth Lifts Williams Over Trinity in Softball Championship

MEDFORD, Mass. - Williams College scored all of its runs in the fourth inning and earned a 5-3 victory over Trinity College in game two of the 2007 NESCAC Softball Championship on Friday afternoon at Tufts University s Spicer Field.

The Ephs (20-14) will now play host Tufts in the winner s bracket on Saturday at 12:30 pm. Trinity (20-10) will face Wesleyan University in an elimination game on Saturday morning at 10:00.

Trinity had the bases loaded in the top of the first with two outs, but did not score. They managed to build a 3-0 lead against the Ephs by scoring twice in the third and once in the fourth. First-year CF Jessica Tait (North Salem, N.Y.) led off the third with a single, moved to third on a bunt and a single and scored on a base hit by senior pitcher Sara Dougherty (Long Valley, N.J.). Trinity then loaded the bases and Dougherty scored when first-year 2B Patricia Capicchio (Southmont, N.C.) was hit by a pitch. In the third, the Bantams scored again as sophomore catcher Ariana Mullin (Woodbrige, Wash.) doubled home senior shortstop Stacy Hills (Menlo Park, Calif.) with two outs.

Dougherty had retired the Ephs nine in a row entering the fourth and had a runner on with two outs. She then hit pitcher Morgan Simpson (McLean, Va.) with a pitch and walked catcher Katie Powers (North Reading, Mass.) to load the bases. Eph senior LF Katelyn Knox (Great Falls, Va.) then tied the game and cleared the bases with one swing, a double to right-center.  Junior 3B Taryn Goodman (New City, N.Y.) followed with a two-run home run and Williams led 5-3.

Trinity put runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, but did not score. The Ephs also had chances to capitalize on their lead in the late innings, but did not convert.

Williams won on four hits, with Simpson going the distance and striking out eight to earn her 10th win of the season. Dougherty pitched five out of six scoreless innings, but took the loss and dropped to 8-6. Mullin finished with two hits for the Bantams.
