MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Wesleyan recovered from an early 3-1 deficit and rolled to victory over Williams, 13-3, in Game 3 of the 2008 NESCAC Softball Championship. It was the first tine in its eight NESCAC tournament appearances, three of which led to titles, that Williams was the first team out of the four-team field. It also was the first victory in tournament play for Wesleyan, which went 0-2 in its initial appearance in 2007.
After a three-run home run by senior Katie Powers spotted Williams a 3-1 advantage after one inning, the Cardinals went to work and got three runs of their own in the top of the 2nd inning to take the lead for good, 4-3. Triggering the rally was freshman Talia Bernstein with her two-run single.
Freshman Anu Rimal sent a two-run blast over the left-field fence in the 3rd inning to up the Wesleyan lead to 6-3. All six of the Wesleyan runs to that point were unearned as one Williams error in each frame contributed to extending opportunity to Wesleyan. The Cardinals extended their margin to 9-3 by the end of the 5th inning and a four-run outburst in the 7th accounted for the final score.
Bernstein and sophomore Neaghan Dendy both went 3-for-4 for Wesleyan with Bernstein driving in three runs and scoring twice while Dendy also crossed the plate twice. Powers led the Ephs by going 2-for-3. After yielding three hits and three runs in the 1st inning, Wesleyan pitcher Karla Hargrave tossed six shutout innings with only three additional hits allowed.
