Williams Earns Men's Swimming & Diving Championship

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams College claimed its ninth conference crown on Sunday evening, taking the 2010 NESCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships with 1,937.5 points. Tufts finished as the runner-up to the Ephs for the third-straight year with 1,452.5 points. Rounding out the top five were Amherst (1,352), Middlebury (1,029.5) and Hamilton (757).
Amherst sophomore Ryan Lichtenfel successfully defended his title in the 1,650-yard freestyle on Sunday evening, besting Williams junior Gary Roberson for the second year in a row.
Tim White from the Lord Jeffs edged Connecticut College's Tim Walsh by five one-hundreths of a second in the finals of the 200-yard backstroke, finishing the race in 1:51.20. In the 100-yard freestyle, Williams sophomore Ben Wampler surpassed 2009 title winner Alex Fraser.
Rookies Paul Dyrkacz and Chris Corbett of Williams completed a 1-2 finish for the Ephs in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Middlebury junior John Dillon won his third event of the weekend, the 200-yard butterfly.
Tufts senior Robert Matera claimed the 3-meter diving crown with a score of 465.15, just 12 points ahead of sophomore Kyle Beek from Trinity.
The Middlebury 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Schuyler Beeman, Dillon, Bob Divers, and Nick Daly set a new championship standard in the event, as the four swimmers teamed up to complete the race in 3:01.12.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams continued to hold onto its lead following day two of the 2010 NESCAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship. The Ephs now have 1355.5 points, followed by Tufts (1027), Amherst (993), Middlebury (708.5), and Connecticut College (549.5). The third and final day of competition will begin tomorrow, February 28, 2010 with trials at 10:00 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m.
Tufts started off the day with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:33.96) by Michael del Moro, Lawrence Chan, Patrick Kinsella, and Owen Rood.
Williams junior Gary Roberson earned the Ephs’ first individual victory of the meet and broke a pool record with his performance in the 1,000-yard freestyle(9:27.54).Eph rookie John Armstrong edged Colby senior Kevin Smith for second by three tenths of a second.
For Amherst, Ryan Lichtenfel earned a NESCAC title in the 400 IM with a time of (3:59.85). After winning the 50-yard backstroke on Friday, Middlebury junior John Dillon added the 100-yard butterfly title to his haul. Dillon set a record in the event in the morning prelims.
Amherst's Alex Fraser came away with the individual title in the 200-yard Freestyle, while sophomore teammate Ben McBratney won the 100-yard breaststroke.
Connecticut College sophomore Tim Walsh defended his title in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 50.71.
Amherst won the final event of the day, the 800-yard freestyle relay, in a pool-record time of 6:43.10. Williams finished second in the race, while Hamilton was third.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams leads after day one of the 2010 NESCAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship hosted at Williams College. The Ephs earned 740 points today, followed by Tufts (526), Amherst (484), Middlebury (340), and Connecticut College (316). The competition will resume tomorrow, Feb. 27, 2010 with trials at 10:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Highlights of the day included a record-breaking win by Ben Wampler, Paul Dyrkacz, Andrew D’Ignazio, and Graham Righi of Williams in the 200 Freestyle Relay (3:27.19).
The Bowdoin sophomore tandem of Nathan Mecray and Mac Routh won titles, with Mecray taking the 50-yard breaststroke, while Routh edged Connecticut College senior Pat Troy for the 50-yard butterfly title by one-tenth of a second.
Amherst junior Alex Fraser set a pool record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:29.84, just ahead of sophomore teammate Ryan Lichtenfel. Fraser already owns the championship record in the 500 free, which he set last year.
Middlebury junior John Dillon took the first backstroke event of the weekend, edging out defending champion Tim Walsh of Connecticut College. Ben McBratney of Amherst beat the field in the 200-yard IM.
Wesleyan had a 1-2 finish in the 1-meter diving event, with J.P Balette taking first over G Galluzzo.
Middlebury won the final event of the day, the 400-yard medley relay. The Panthers edged the Lord Jeffs for the win by just over a second. Middlebury’s Schuyler Beeman, a member of the 400 medley squad, took first in the 50 yard free (20.68) earlier in the day.
