2007-08 NESCAC Women's Basketball Players of the Week

March 3, 2008
Shaina Pollack, Amherst
(Senior, Guard - Great Neck, N.Y.)
Pollack helped the Jeffs win the 2008 NESCAC Women’s Basketball Championship, the first NESCAC title in program history for Amherst. Pollack averaged 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists during the final rounds of the tournament. After pouring in a game-high 18 points in Saturday’s semifinal win over Bowdoin, Pollack netted a career-high 22 points during Sunday’s championship victory over Tufts. For the weekend, Pollack was 6-for-10 from three-point range and 12-for-14 from the free throw line.

Katie Bergeron, Bowdoin
(First Year, Guard - Bradley, Maine)
Bergeron was the driving force behind the Polar Bears’ victory over Bates in the quarterfinals of the 2008 NESCAC Women’s Basketball Championship this past weekend. Bergeron scored a career-high 24 points, going 7-for-11 from the field (.636) while tying the school record for three-pointers in a game with six. She also led Bowdoin with six rebounds and three steals, as the Polar Bears remained perfect in NESCAC championship play with an all-time record of 21-0.

Khalilah Ummah, Tufts
(Senior, Forward - Litchfield, Maine)
Ummah had a big weekend for the Jumbos against Bowdoin and Colby, averaging 18.5 points and 15.5 rebounds while shooting an impressive 64.3 percent from the floor (18- for-28). During Friday’s 83-56 win over Bowdoin, the first win for the Jumbos over the Polar Bears since December of 1994, Ummah had a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. She came out Saturday afternoon against Colby and grabbed 19 boards, the most for a Tufts player in a game in 12 years, while scoring 17 points and adding five blocks in an 84-60 victory, hitting eight of her 12 field goal attempts.

Taylor Shea, Williams
(First Year, Forward - Allendale, N.J.)
Shea averaged 14.5 points and 10.0 rebounds during a 1-1 week for the Ephs. Friday evening against Bates, Shea recorded her first double-double of the week with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds in a setback to the Bobcats. Shea came out Saturday afternoon against Tufts and scored a game-high 16 points while grabbing 10 boards in a 63-46 victory over the Jumbos. Shea is third among conference rookies in scoring this season, averaging 11.5 points through 22 games.

Jill Anelauskas, Bowdoin
(Junior, Forward - Medfield, Mass.)
Anelauskas led the Polar Bears in scoring during a pair of key NESCAC victories over Trinity and Amherst last week, averaging 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds while hitting 52 percent (13-for-25) of her shots and 82 percent (9-for-11) of her free throws. Friday evening against the Bantams, Anelauskas scored a team-high 14 points in a 63-50 win. Saturday afternoon, Anelauskas poured in a season-high 23 points to go along with a career-high 17 rebounds during a 72-61 victory over the Jeffs that pushed the Polar Bears into first place in the NESCAC standings.

Lucy Sprung, Wesleyan
(Senior, Forward - Wilmington, Vt.)
Sprung recorded three double-doubles last week as she averaged 19.3 points and 12.0 rebounds per game while shooting 61 percent (25-for-41) from the floor and 89 percent (8-for-9) from the line during a 2-1 week for the Cardinals. Sprung started the week with a career-high 32 points, the most by a Wesleyan player in six seasons, and 15 rebounds in a 73-68 setback at Williams on Tuesday. She closed the week with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a victory at Colby on Friday and 14 points and 11 boards in a 62-49 win at Bowdoin on Saturday, as the Cardinals snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Polar Bears. Sprung also contributed seven assists, four blocks and two steals last week.

Caitlin Hynes, Bowdoin
(Sophomore, Forward - Owl’s Head, Maine)
Hynes averaged 16.7 points and 5.3 rebounds during a 3-0 week for the Polar Bears, shooting an impressive 60.7 percent (17-for-28) from the field and hitting all three of her three-point attempts while blocking six shots. Hynes came off the bench during Friday’s NESCAC opener at Williams and scored a game-high 15 points to rally the Polar Bears from a nine-point deficit to a 65-62 win. Saturday afternoon at Middlebury, Hynes made her first start of the season and dropped a career-high 21 points along with adding five rebounds as she led all scores during a 54-51 victory.

Katie McCabe, Colby
(Senior, Forward - Watertown, Conn.)
McCabe averaged 18.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists and steals during a 2-0 week for the Mules. McCabe shot 59 percent (13-for-22) from the floor and was 10-for-11 (.911) from the foul line. During Wednesday’s victory over Gordon, McCabe had 21 points to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her career. She closed out the week with a double-double in a win at Mitchell, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. She now has 1,015 career points and 579 career rebounds.

Emily Johnson, Middlebury
(Junior, Guard - Lower Gwynedd, Pa.)
Johnson led the Panthers in scoring over two outings last week, averaging 24.5 points per game. Johnson had a game-high 26 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds in a setback at Eastern Conn. St. on Thursday. She closed the week with a game-high 23 points in an overtime victory at Skidmore on Saturday. For the week, Johnson was 15-for-34 (.441) from the floor and 10-for-24 (.417) from behind the arc, averaging 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.5 steals.

Ali Fourney, Wesleyan
(Junior, Guard - East Northport, N.Y.)
Fourney averaged 24.0 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 60 percent from the floor (15-for-25), 78 percent from behind the arc (7-for-9), and 85 percent at the line (11-for-13) over two games for the Cardinals. She also had five assists, eight steals and a block during the week. Fourney scored a career-high 27 points during Thursday's win over Emmanuel.

Samantha Swensen, Amherst
(Sophomore, Forward/Center - Rockaway Park, N.Y.)
Swensen earned Tournament MVP honors at the Pioneer Valley Classic as part of a 3-0 Jeff week. Swensen averaged 15.3 points on 71.4 percent shooting (20-for-28), adding in 6.3 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals while going 6-for-7 from the foul line. She matched her career high of 22 points on Friday against Westfield St.

Katy Serafin, Connecticut College
(Senior, Forward - Carmel, N.Y.)
Serafin earned the 24th double-double of her career on Tuesday at Nichols, scoring 21 points and registering 14 rebounds to go along with four steals and an assist. She finished the game 6-for-12 from the floor and 9-for-12 from the foul line. Serafin is now just 29 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points at Connecticut College.

Ummah shot 71.4 percent from the floor (15-for-21) and averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game as the Jumbos came away with the Endicott Tip-Off Invitational title over the weekend. Ummah took over down the stretch in the championship game against the host Gulls on Sunday and finished the contest with 19 points and seven rebounds.
