Colby Upends Amherst in Women's Ice Hockey First Round

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College women's hockey team opened up a 3-0 lead at one point in the opening period and received three goals from first-year player Rebecca Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) in a 4-2 victory over Amherst College in the first round of the 2006 NESCAC Women's Ice Hockey Championship Saturday at Alfond Rink.
Colby (15-7-1) will play at top-seeded Middlebury College in a semifinal game next Saturday at 1 p.m. Bowdoin College, the second seed, and third-seeded Williams College will play in the other game.
Colby, the fourth seed, got goals from Julian at
6:38 and 8:17 of the first period. Lauren Goethals (Needham, Mass.)
had her 10th assist of the season on the first goal, while
first-year forward Laura Anning (Ingramport, Nova Scotia) notched
her 16th assist on the second score.
Heather Nickerson (Falmouth, Mass.) put the Mules up 3-0 at 15:25
of the first period off an assist from Nicole Crocker (Dover,
Mass.).
Amherst (11-14), the fifth seed, bounced back quickly when first-year forward Anna MacLean (Edina, Minn.) scored unassisted for her 10th goal of the year just 1:26 after Colby's third goal to make it 3-1 after one period.
Despite a 15-8 advantage in shots for Amherst in the second period, Colby came away with the only goal. Julian got her 14th goal of the season on the power play off an assist from Nickerson at 16:06. Colby goalie Genevieve Triganne (Point-Claire, Quebec) made 15 of her 24 saves in the second period.
Tarasai Karega (Detroit, Mich.) got Amherst back within two goals at 4-2 with her 16th goal of the year at 7:57 of the third period on the power play. Megan Quinn (Wakefield, Mass.) and Tes Siarnacki (Gardner, Mass.) had assists on the score.
Amherst goalie Stacey Johnston (Kingston, Ontario) had 15 of her 31 saves in the third period.
