Amherst Advances to Women's Ice Hockey Championship with 2-1 Win

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Amherst will makes its second consecutive trip to the final game of the NESCAC Women's Ice Hockey Championship after a 2-1 win over Trinity at Middlebury Saturday afternoon. The defending champion Jeffs will take on Colby, a 3-2 overtime winner over Middlebury, on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Amherst opened the scoring with 5:04 left in the first period as Courtney Hanlon put home her own rebound. An evenly played first period saw Amherst hold a 7-5 shots advantage.

The Jeffs made it a 2-0 game at the 6:23 mark of the second period with a goal from C.C. Wyshnytzky. Alyssa Chwick sent the puck in from the right side that was tipped by Wyshnytzky before apparently deflecting in off a defender’s skate. Trinity cut the lead in half with a power play goal at 11:07 of the second period. Laura Komarek sent the puck in from the left side where Michelle Chee tipped it in for the goal to make it a 2-1 Amherst lead.

Both teams had some quality opportunities to score in the third period, but Isabel Iwachiw of Trinity (29 saves) and Krystyn Elek of Amherst (23 saves) both stood their ground.
