Bowdoin Downs Wesleyan in Women's Lacrosse First Round

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Behind a four-goal effort from Brooke Nentwig, the Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team cruised into the NESCAC Semifinals with a 13-6 victory over Wesleyan in NESCAC Quarterfinal action on Sunday. Bowdoin, the second seed, improves to 14-2 on the season- one win shy of tying the school record for wins set in 1986. The Polar Bears advance to play in the semifinals against Amherst next Saturday at Middlebury College at 2:30. Wesleyan ends their season with a record of 7-8.

With Bowdoin leading 2-1 in the early going, back-to-back tallies from Kate Donoghue keyed a 3-0 spurt as Bowdoin took control of the contest.

Leading 5-2 at intermission, the Polar Bears put away any Wesleyan hope with five goals in the first 6:46 of the second half. Nentwig capped the rally with a pair of scores as the Bowdoin run increased the lead to 10-3. Wesleyan leading scorer Becky Meredith led the Cardinals with a three-goal effort, while the Polar Bears were led by by a five-point effort from McDonald (three goals, two assists).

Kendall Cox was stellar in goal for Bowdoin, making a season-high 14 saves between the pipes. Kate Jones stopped 10 shots for the Cardinals.

The victory advances Bowdoin to the NESCAC semifinals for the second straight season. The Polar Bears, who will play Amherst, defeated the Jeffs on Saturday, 10-7 in overtime.
