HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior Antonia Clark (New York, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal on an assist by freshman Whitney Thayer (Lancaster, Pa.) with 34 seconds left in the second half of overtime to lead the visiting Williams College Ephs to a 14-13 win over the Trinity College Bantams in the opening round of the 2007 NESCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship this afternoon at Sheppard Field. Trinity falls to 11-4 with its first loss in five games, while the Ephs improve to 6-7 with their first win in six games. Williams advances to the NESCAC Semifinals and will face top-seeded Middlebury on Saturday, May 5.
Trinity scored six of the first seven goals of the second half to take an 11-5 lead with 12:16 remaining in regulation, but the Ephs rattled off six goals including the game-tying score by senior midfielder Kaylan Tildsley (Andover, Mass.) with 21 seconds on the clock. Tildsley scored or assisted six of the Ephs' second half tallies. She assisted on consecutive goals in the last 3:11 to cut the Bantam lead to 11-9 with 1:30 left, and scored an unassisted goal with 51 seconds remaining to bring Williams within one. Tildsley stole the ball from a Trinity player after the Bantams had won the ensuing draw and converted on the game-tying assist from junior Sarah duPont (Easton, Md.) to force the extra period.
Eph freshman attacker Tina Nawrocki (Winchester, United Kingdom) scored the first goal of overtime on a wrap around move from behind the net with 1:51 on the clock, but Trinity junior attacker C.J. Yanofsky (Needham, Mass.) answered with a goal on the same move to tie the game at 12-12. Williams went ahead, 13-12, with just one tick left in the first half of overtime when senior attacker Elizabeth Pierce (Wilmington, Del.) scored on a free position shot. Yanofsky beat her defender one on one from the left side to tie the game for the last time at 13-13 just 20 seconds into the second half of overtime, but Thayer passed to Clark on another Williams free position opportunity who one-timed the ball into the net for the clincher.
Trinity senior co-captain attacker Lauren Malinowski (Longmeadow, Mass.) notched a team-high five points on three goals and two assists, while Yanofsky finished with three scores, and sophomore middie Carrie Disa (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored twice. Bantam freshman Jenn Calver (Barnard, Vt.) added a goal and an assist and junior goalie Michelle Smith (Wayland, Mass.) made 13 saves. Tildsley led all scorers with four goals and five assists, while senior attacker Emily Gladden (Princeton, N.J.) scored three times for the Ephs, and sophomore midfielder Britt Spackman (Newton, Mass.) had two goals and one assist. Senior Abby Taylor (Evanston, Ill.) finished with 11 saves including two in the second half of overtime.
