Colby Edges Bowdoin in Women's Lacrosse First Round, 10-9

WATERVILLE, Maine - Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:15 left for her fourth goal of the contest to lift fourth-seeded Colby College to a 10-9 win over fifth-seeded Bowdoin College in a NESCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship first round game Sunday at Bill Alfond Field.
Colby (11-4) will take on sixth-seeded Amherst in a NESCAC semifinal game next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Middlebury College. Amherst took a 13-5 win against third-seeded Wesleyan on Sunday.
After Bowdoin (9-6) used a 4-0 scoring run to tie the game at 7-7, the teams traded goals until Julian got the game-winning score off an assist from Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.).
The first half and the first 20 minutes of the second half was a game of scoring runs. Colby scored the first two goals of the game only to see the Polar Bears score three straight. The Mules then had the last four goals of the opening half for a 6-3 margin at intermission and added a fifth straight goal with the first score of the second half. Bowdoin then went on the 4-0 run to tie the game at 7-7.
Julian scored with 10:15 left on a free position to make it 8-7, but Bowdoin's Christina Denitzio (Martinsville, N.J.) tallied less than 30 seconds later at 9:47 to tie it again. Colby's Allie Libby put the Mules up again with an unassisted goal with 8:10 left.
Neither team could manage a goal over the next four minutes until Bowdoin's Kate Donoghue (Plandome, N.Y.) scored off an assist from Lyndsey Colburn (Concord, N.H.) with 3:58 remaining. Julian took a nice cross from Sheridan to slam home the winning goal with 2:15 left on the clock.
Julian scored two goals in each half, while Libby finished with one goal and three assists.
Sheridan had two goals and one assist for Colby, Lauren Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.) added two goals and Libba Cox (Guilford, Conn.) scored once.
Taylor White (Wellesley, Mass.) finished with three goals to lead Bowdoin. Colburn had a goal and an assist, Donoghue had two goals, while Denitzio, Grace Moore (Groton, Mass.) and Bobbi Dennison (Freeport, Maine) all had one goal.
Colby goalie Catharine O'Brien (Reading, Vt.) stopped 12 shots, while Bowdoin keeper Stephanie Collins-Finn (Menands, N.Y.) made 14 saves.
