Trinity Rolls Past Bates, 16-6, in Women's Lacrosse Quarterfinals

HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior attacker Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, Mass.) amassed five goals and an assist to go with three ground balls and three draw controls to lead top-seeded Trinity to a 16-6 victory over eighth-seeded Bates in the quarterfinals of the 2010 NESCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Sunday afternoon on Sheppard Field. The Bantams improve to 13-2 and will host the semifinals and finals for the first time next weekend. Trinity will play Williams College on Saturday, May 8 at 12:00 p.m. Bates’ season comes to a close at 7-8.
Trinity dominated the game statistically with 37 shots to just 11 for Bates, a 19-to-10 ground ball advantage, and a 15-to-9 edge on the draw. The Bantams forced 14 turnovers and six failed clears by the Bobcats. Scoring came slowly for both teams early, but with the game tied at 2-2 after 15 minutes, Trinity used a 12-2 run over the next 18-plus minutes, including eight in a row to close the first half and open the second, to put the game out of reach early. Irvine scored four of her five goals in the first half, while senior tri-captain Jenn Calver (Barnard, Vt.) notched all four of her points for the day on three goals and an assist during the 8-0 Bantam spurt.
Six different players scored the Bates goals, including early tallies by sophomore Joan O’Neill (Westwood, Mass.) and freshman attacker Jenn Brallier (Chambersburg, Pa.) to support a 2-1 Bobcat lead 10:31 into the game. O’Neill also had a pair of assists, while senior Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine) caused three turnovers, sophomore midfielder Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) scored once and added three draw controls, and junior Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) stopped 16 shots in the Bates goal.
Trinity senior tri-captain midfielder Sarah Remes (Silver Spring, Md.) added four goals and an assist, while junior midfielder Alisen Urquhart (Redding, Conn.) scored twice, and senior attacker Kristin Phelps (Sudbury, Mass.) had one goal and one assist. Calver also finished with a game-high four draw controls, while senior Anne Cook (Washington, D.C.) contributed three ground balls and three caused turnovers, and sophomore Liz Bruno (Andover, Mass.) registered an assist, two grounders, two draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper Gina Dinallo (West Hartford, Conn.) needed to make just three saves to earn the victory and improve to 8-2 for the spring.
