2002 Women's Soccer Championship Field Announced
HARTFORD, Conn. - Tufts, Bowdoin and Williams all won on the final Saturday of regular season play to force a three-way tie atop the NESCAC women's soccer standings at 6-2-1. Using predetermined tiebreaking procedures, Tufts will be the tournament's number one seed and receives a first round bye. Tufts, who finished 10-3-1 in the regular season, will host the semifinals and finals on Saturday-Sunday, November 9-10.
Bowdoin (6-2-1 NESCAC, 11-2-1
overall) earns the second seed and will host seventh seed Trinity
(3-4-2 NESCAC, 7-5-2 overall). Bowdoin defeated Trinity 3-0 earlier
this season.
Third seed Williams (6-2-1 NESCAC, 10-3-1 overall) will host sixth
seed Middlebury (4-2-3 NESCAC, 8-3-3 overall). Middlebury beat
Williams 2-1 in Williamstown on October 12th.
Tufts, Bowdoin and Williams were all 1-1 in head to head competition and all finished the regular season with six conference wins. The next tiebreaking criteria compares the record of tied teams with the top four teams in league standings. Tufts and Bowdoin were 2-1 against the top four teams while Williams was 1-2. Tufts earns the number one seed having defeated Bowdoin in head-to-head competition.
Connecticut College (5-3-1 NESCAC, 9-4-1 overall) will travel as the fifth seed to fourth seed Amherst (5-2-2 NESCAC 8-4-2 overall). Amherst defeated Connecticut College 2-0 in their season opener.
The top seven teams qualify for the NESCAC Championship. First round games will be played on Sunday, November 3 at 12:30 pm. First round winners will advance to the semifinals at Tufts on Saturday, November 9. Teams are reseeded entering the semifinal round with number one seed Tufts playing the lowest remaining seed. The NESCAC Champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.
