2003 Women's Soccer All-Conference Teams Announced

Amherst's Harmeling Named Player of the Year

HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior forward Ashley Harmeling of Amherst College was named the 2003 NESCAC Player of the Year in a vote of the conference coaches. Harmeling led the conference with 18 goals and helped the Jeffs to the NESCAC Championship and an NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament berth.

Connecticut College Christa Thoeresz was named to her third consecutive all-conference first team. The junior midfielder was named the NESCAC Player of the Year last season and the conference Rookie of the Year in 2001. Thoeresz was joined by Camel teammate Christine Culver. Culver, a senior defender, made her first appearance on the first team after being a second team selection a year ago.

Tufts seniors Jess Trombly and Jess Lovitz were each honored on the first team for the second straight season. Trombly finished the year with six goals from her forward position while Lovitz led the Jumbos defense which held 11 opponents to one goal or fewer.

Junior Kendall Cox was one of three Bowdoin Polar Bears named to the first team. Seniors Jill Falwell and Michal Shapiro also garnered first-team honors. Falwell led Bowdoin in scoring with nine goals on the year. Cox, a junior defender, and Shapiro, a senior midfielder, anchored a defense which allowed just 10 goals in 15 games.

Williams juniors Hannah Stauffer and Lindsay Dwyer were each named to the all-conference squad. Stauffer, a repeat first-team selection, led the Ephs with four assists from her midfield position. Dwyer, ranked fourth in the conference in scoring, finished with 10 goals on the year.

Bates seniors Lynne Antinarelli and Catherine Crosby round out the first team selections. Antinarelli, a senior goalkeeper, posted nine shutouts on the year with a 0.82 goals against average. Crosby contributed six goals and six assists as Bates finished the season 12-3-2.

Colby freshman forward Laura Williamson was honored as 2003 NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Williamson finished with 14 goals in 14 games and led the conference with 35 points.

Bates head coach Jim Murphy was named NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers after leading the Bobcats to the NESCAC Championship game and a five win improvement over last year’s mark of 7-7.

NESCAC all-conference selections are determined in a vote by the conference coaches. Additional players honored are due to ties in the voting.
