The Herons and the Ephs will play tomorrow, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. for a chance to advance to the national semifinals in San Antonio. In 2010, William Smith and Williams also met in the sectional finals on Cozzens Field, and the Herons came away with a 1-0 victory.
Middlebury finished its season with a 13-4-2 overall record. The Panthers scored first just 8:08 into the match. It was just the second goal that the Herons have allowed through 20 games.
William Smith answered at 14:19 into the match. Senior Alyse DiCenzo blasted a long pass into the box. First-year Dineo Mmutla was there to collect the ball and send a shot just out of the Panthers' keeper's reach. It hit the far right post and slid into the right corner of the goal. Mmutla leads the Herons with 10 goals this season.
Just 3:06 later, junior Renee Jensen scored what proved to be the game-winner for William Smith. She dribbled into the box, and as the Middlebury goalie came out to play the ball, Jensen placed a shot into the far right corner. It was her fourth goal this season.
Davis finished with three saves in all 90 minutes for William Smith. She sits atop the William Smith list for victories in a season with 19.
