2003 NESCAC Women's Tennis All-Conference Teams Announced

Hall of Williams and Colby's Hughes Share Player of the Year Honors

HARTFORD, Conn. – Williams' Stephanie Hall and Colby's Sara Hughes were named co-Players of the Year at the 2003 NESCAC Women's Tennis Championship. Hall earned All-NESCAC first team honors for the third consecutive year after winning the 'A' flight singles title (consisting of first and second singles players) and leading the Ephs to their third straight NESCAC Championship this past weekend. Hughes, unseeded in both the 'A' flight singles draw and '#1' flight doubles draw, advanced to the semifinals of each to help Colby to a fifth place finish. Kristen Raverta of Amherst was named Rookie of the Year, Lindsay Schantz of Hamilton was honored as Senior Sportswoman of the Year, and Paul Gastonguay of Bates earned Coach of the Year accolades.

The All-NESCAC team was determined from action at the tournament. Each player who reached the final in any of the three singles flights or won any of the three doubles flights earned first-team All-NESCAC honors. Each player who advanced to the semifinal round in singles or reached the final in doubles received second-team all-conference recognition. Other accolades are voted upon by the coaches in the conference.

Amherst's Raverta, who fell in the 'A' flight singles championship match, is joined by teammate and 'B' flight singles (third and fourth singles players) champion Tristan Hedrick on the first team. Tufts senior Iffy Saeed won the 'C' flight singles draw (fifth and sixth singles players) and is making her first appearance on the all-conference first team after two consecutive years as a second team selection. She is joined by the Tufts' doubles team of Jennifer Lejb and Katie Nordstrom who won the #1 doubles draw.

Senior Tracy Cheung of Williams was honored on the first team in both singles and doubles for the third consecutive year. Cheung was the runner-up in the 'C' flight singles and won the #2 doubles draw with teammate Julie Mallory. Williams' Brittany Binet and Alex Maclennan, champions of the #3 doubles flight, were also first team honorees.
