SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Williams women’s tennis team saw its season come to a close in the NCAA round of eight today, as the Ephs suffered a tough 5-0 loss to Washington & Lee. Williams ends its season with a 14-7 record, quite a turnaround from last spring’s final tally of 7-13. With the win, Washington & Lee continues its perfect season, upping its record to 27-0, and moves on to the final four.

The Ephs had trouble handing Washington & Lee’s strong doubles duos. On court one, Cary Gibson and Annie Schniedman fell first, 8-2. Soon after, Alex Maclennan and Allie Rottkamp dropped their match on court two, by a score of 8-4.

On court three, Courtney Bartlett and Annie Hancock played a highly competitive match against Washington & Lee’s Rebecca Timmis and Leah Weston. The Eph duo was up a point, 8-7, but could not hang on. Bartlett and Hancock fell 9-8 to give Washington & Lee a crucial third doubles points.

Down 3-0 going into singles, the young Ephs couldn’t pull out enough shots to handle their powerhouse opponent. First, Schneidman dropped her match on court six to Washington & Lee’s Kelly Will, 6-2, 6-1. Shortly after, Washington & Lee’s McClung topped Hancock in straight sets to clinch the victory.

While the loss is disappointing, the Ephs closed out the season on a steady curve of improvement. The loss signals the end of Williams season as a team, however Cary Gibson and Annie Schneidman have been selected to compete as a pair in the NCAA doubles championship, which will commence on May 20.
