MEDFORD, Mass. - The Williams College women's tennis team advanced to the quarter-final round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament with a 5-0 victory over host Tufts University in the third round on Sunday afternoon at Voute Courts.

The Ephs (18-4) will travel to the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia for the continuation of the NCAA Tournament on May 15. They eliminated a Tufts team that set a new school mark for victories with its 13-7 final record.

Williams was too much for Tufts on this day. The #1 doubles match was the only close one, with the Williams pair of Cary Gibson (Augusta, Ga.) and Anne Schneidman (Sherborn, Mass.) earning a 9-7 win over Jumbos Jennifer Luten (Clayton, Mo.) and Kylyn Deary (Jackson, Mich.). The match featured the #2 and #6 ranked doubles teams in the Northeast.

Otherwise, Williams won their matches handily. Grace Baljon (Ponte Verda Beach, Fla.) and Allie Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) were 8-2 winners at #2 doubles, and Ashley Parsons (New Canaan, Conn.) and Annie Hancock (Syracuse, N.Y.) shut out their opponents in the third doubles match.

Needing two singles victories to win the match, the Ephs got them at the #3 and #6 spots. After Schneidman beat Tufts first-year Erica Miller (Boca Raton, Fla.) 6-1 and 6-1 at #6, Parsons defeated Tufts junior Andrea Cenko (St. Louis, Mo.) at #3, 6-4 and 6-3.

Ranked second in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national poll, Williams will go to Virginia looking to compete for the NCAA Championship. Though the Tufts team season is over, Luten will compete in the NCAA Singles tournament May 18-20 at Mary Washington, while she and Deary are alternates for the NCAA Doubles tournament.
