AMHERST, Mass. - Amherst advanced to the NESCAC Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday with a convincing win over the Bowdoin Polar Bears on Saturday afternoon, 7-2. Amherst avenged an April 15, 2007 loss to Bowdoin with the victory today, handing the Polar Bears just their second loss all year. Williams was the only other team to beat Bowdoin this season.
Amherst took all three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead into singles play, before two quick wins sealed the victory. The two schools played out the remainder of the match, with Amherst losing only two team points, one of which coming on a third set retirement.
Amherst first-year sensation Brittany Berckes (Secaucas, N.J.) was the first singles player to earn a point for Amherst, winning her match 6-2, 6-2. Junior Laura Stein (Rockport, Maine) sealed the win for Amherst in the number six match with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
