AMHERST, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's tennis team cruised past UMass-Dartmouth in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday, 5-0. The Polar Bears improve to 9-8 this season and will face Tufts for the third time in three weeks in the second round of the tournament on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Corsairs end their season with a mark of 15-2.

Bowdoin took a three-point sweep of UMass-Dartmouth in doubles play, with the closest match coming between Polar Bears Sarah D'Elia and Emily Lombardi against Corsairs Becky Bullock and Amy Lopes. The UMass-Dartmouth pair took a trio of games off the Bowdoin duo, while their teammates at numbers two and three were shutout for 8-0 results.

In singles play, Bowdoin quickly picked up the two clinching points it needed to advance out of today's opening round. At number two singles, Lombardi picked up her second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win over Bullock. Teammate Elizabeth Pedowitz was equally impressive with a 6-1, 6-0 clinching victory over Allion DeAngelis at number four. The Polar Bears were leading in every remaing match when the victory was sealed.

The Polar Bears will look to avenge two consecutive losses to Tufts, who bounced Bowdoin in their regular-season finale on April 26 and in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament on May 1.
