Browne, Baljon to Meet for NCAA Women's Tennis Individual Title

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Tufts junior Julia Browne, the two-time NESCAC Player of the Year, will face Williams senior Grace Baljon for the 2010 NCAA Women's Tennis individual title on Sunday. Both players came away with wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Browne and senior teammate Meghan McCooey are still alive in the doubles championship, with semifinal action scheduled to take place on Sunday as well at Mary Washington

Browne downed Leslie Hansen of MIT, 6-1, 6-4, in the quarterfinals, then got past Brittany Berckes of Amherst, 6-2, 6-0, to reach the finals. Baljon needed three sets to overcome both Nicole Pontee of Vassar in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2, and Jackie Shtemberg of TCNJ in the semis, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Other NESCAC players in action in the singles tournament included Berckes of Amherst and Kristin Alotta of Williams. The two met in the quarterfinals with Baljon coming away with a 7-5, 6-4 victory before Berckes fell to Browne.

In the doubles quarterfinals on Saturday, Browne and McCooey rolled past Prita Kidder and Amy Schlessman of Kenyon, 6-1, 6-3, and will face Kendra Higgins and Chrissy Hu of Chicago in the semifinals. Berckes and Laura Danzig of Amherst fell to Kristin Cobb and Marta Drane of Dennison, 7-5, 7-6.
