Four Women's Tennis Players Reach Quarterfinal Round of NCAA Singles Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Four women's tennis players representing four different NESCAC teams are among the eight quarterfinalists in the NCAA singles championship. Among the four is Tufts senior Julia Browne, the three-time NESCAC Player of the Year and the 2010 NCAA singles champion.

Browne downed Courtney Goimarac of Mary Washington, 6-2, 6-2, before moving past Jennifer Kung from Chicago, 6-2, 6-3.

Also in the quarterfinals are Kristin Alotta of Williams, Jordan Brewer of Amherst, and Victoria Aiello of Middlebury.

Alotta won 6-2, 6-2 over Kate Sanford (Sewanee) in the first round before dispatching Melissa Oosterhouse (Calvin) 6-2, 6-2.

Brewer also won both her opening day matches in straight sets, putting on dominating performances in wins over Ariel Taylor (Sweet Briar), 6-0, 6-3, and Kristin Cobb (Denison), 6-0, 6-1.

Aiello earned a straight-set victory over Ariel Lewis of Oberlin in the round of 32, 7-5, 6-1, but needed to come from a one-set deficit to defeat Laura Chen (Carnegie Mellon), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Alotta, seeded fifth in the tournament, will take on top seed Gabrielle Clark of Emory in the quarterfinals. The winner will face the victor of the Carolyn Warren (Johns Hopkins) - Kendra Higgins (Chicago) match in the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, Brewer, seeded fourth, will face Browne, the seventh seed, while unseeded Aiello takes on Kristin Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The winners of those matches will meet in the semifinals later on Saturday.

This will be the third time that Browne and Brewer have met this season. Brewer earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Browne in the semifinals of the ITA New England Regional Championships back in the fall, while the match between the two number-ones in the NCAA quarterfinals went unfinished. Brewer won the first set, 6-1, however Browne battled back to take the second 7-5, and led 1-0 in the third set before the match ended.
