Individuals and Doubles Teams Advance in NCAA Women's Tennis Championships

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – After the first day of the Division III Women’s Tennis Individual Championships, two NESCAC singles players and two NESCAC doubles teams remained in the hunt for national titles heading into Friday’s quarterfinal round.

Wesleyan junior Eudice Chong easily moved through the first two rounds of the tournament with wins over Sarah Ikioka of Redlands (6-2, 6-0) and Maryann Zhao of Pomona-Pitzer (6-3, 6-3). Chong will face Catherine Allen of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a quarterfinal round on Friday. 

Chong’s teammate, sophomore Victoria Yu quickly dispatched Denison’s Lauren Hawley, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round. She would face NESCAC foe junior Juli Raventos of Williams in the second round. Raventos, who won the clinching match for the Ephs to help them win the NCAA Team Championship yesterday, defeated Lewis & Clark’s Wiktoria Plawska, 6-0, 6-2 to move onto the second round. Yu won the first set 6-1, but Raventos bounced back with a 6-3 victory to even the match. Yu prevailed in the deciding set, 6-3, to defeat Raventos. Yu will play Caroline Casper of Pomona-Pitzer in the quarterfinals.

Bowdoin junior Tess Trinka was the other NESCAC player to advance out of the first round on Thursday. She pulled out a 7-6 victory in the first set against Mary Cardone of Southwestern and used the momentum to finish the match with a 6-0 win in the second set. However, Trinka fell in three sets to Brooke Donnelly of Washington & Lee (0-6, 7-6, 2-6) in the round of 16.

In other matches involving NESCAC players, Amherst first-year Camille Smukler dropped a three-set match to Liza Southwick of Trinity (Texas) in the first round (6-4, 4-6, 6-7).  Senior Jouila Likhanskaia of Bowdoin lost to Michelle Satterfield of Emory, 6-1, 7-5, and Middlebury sophomore Christina Puccinelli dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Catherine Allen of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Tufts senior Mina Karamercan fell 7-6, 6-4 to Ashnaa Rao of Johns Hopkins and sophomore Leah Bush of Williams suffered a 7-5, 6-2 defeat to Lauren O’Malley of John Carroll. 

In the doubles competition, the Wesleyan duo of Chong and Yu earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kait Brogan and Taylor Diffley of Mary Washington to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round. Joining the Wesleyan duo in the next round will be senior Hannah Atkinson and first-year Chloe Henderson of Williams. The Eph team defeated Brooke Donnelly and Tessa Hill of Washington and Lee, 6-1, 6-4.

The other three NESCAC doubles teams in the competition dropped their first round matches. Bowdoin seniors Samantha Stalder and Likhanskaia fell 6-2, 6-2 to Catherine Allen and Kathleen Kuosman of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Raventos and Linda Shin of Williams suffered a three-set loss to Megan Humphreys and Brigid McGuire (6-3, 3-6, 5-7). Rounding out the results from Thursday were the Middlebury team of rookies Katherine Hughes and Skylar Schossberger. The Panthers dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 4-6 decision to Emily Chen and Maryann Zhao of Pomona-Pitzer.
