Volleyball Championship Takes Place This Weekend at Williams

HARTFORD, Conn. – Finishing conference play with a 9-1 record, Williams College (30-5) earned the top seed in the 2002 NESCAC Volleyball Championship. The eight-team, single elimination tournament will be held at Williams on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9.

Colby, 8-2 in NESCAC play and 23-9 overall, will be the second seed in the tournament and will face seventh seed Middlebury (16-10) at 6 p.m. The Panthers defeated Connecticut College and Trinity on the final day of NESCAC competition to finish with a 4-6 record. Williams will meet eighth seed Trinity (4-6 NESCAC, 13-17 overall) at 6 p.m.

In other first round action, third seed Amherst (8-2 NESCAC, 19-6 overall) will meet sixth seeded Tufts (6-4 NESCAC, 20-12 overall) and fourth seed Bates, who finished 7-3 in NESCAC competition and 23-11 on the year, will square off with fifth seed Wesleyan (6-4 NESCAC, 21-10 overall). Both games will be played at 8 p.m.

Three NESCAC teams were ranked in the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Committee regional rankings through October 27. Williams is ranked fourth with Amherst and Colby placing fifth and eighth respectively.

The semifinals and championship will be played on Saturday. The semifinals will begin at 11 a.m. with the Williams-Trinity winner facing the Bates-Wesleyan winner. The other semifinal will pit the Colby-Middlebury winner against the Amherst-Tufts winner. The final will be played at 3 p.m.

Williams won the 2001 Championship with a five-game victory over Wesleyan. The NESCAC tournament champion will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.

Williams/Trinity winner vs. Bates/Wesleyan winner - 11:00 a.m.
Colby/Middlebury winner vs. Amherst/Tufts winner - 11:00 a.m.

Championship - Saturday, Nov. 9 at Williams

Semifinal winners - 3:00 p.m.
