2009 Volleyball Players of the Week

Andrea Scioscia, Williams
(Senior, Libero - Gibsonia, Pa.)
Scioscia’s defensive play helped the Ephs win the 2009 NESCAC Volleyball Championship this past weekend at Tufts, the third consecutive title for Williams and seventh this decade. Over three matches last week, Scioscia averaged 6.5 digs per set with a total of 65 digs. Against Tufts for the conference title on Sunday, Scioscia had 18 digs, an assist, and a service ace in the 3-0 victory.

Kristen Anderson, Trinity
(Junior, RS - West Haven, Conn.)
Anderson averaged 3.0 kills, 3.3 assists, and 2.3 digs while hitting at a .315 clip during a 2-1 week for the Bantams, which included a 3-2 victory over Tufts on Friday, followed by a 3-1 win against Bowdoin on Saturday. Against the Jumbos, Anderson had 15 kills, 12 assists, nine digs, a block, and a hitting percentage of .371. Anderson added another 15 kills on Saturday versus the Polar Bears along with 17 assists, six digs, an ace and a block. Earlier in the week, Anderson had nine kills, 14 assists, and 14 digs during a 3-1 setback at Coast Guard.

Dena Feiger, Tufts
(Senior, Setter - Long Grove, Ill.)
Feiger was named MVP of the Gold Bracket at the Hall of Fame Invitational over the weekend, which the Jumbos won. During a 4-0 week overall, Feiger averaged 11.0 assists and 3.92 digs per set, as she contributed seven blocks, six kills and three service aces. In the championship match against Williams, Feiger had 45 assists in a 3-0 Tufts victory.
   
Ruby Hernandez, Wesleyan
(Junior, Libero - West Palm Beach, Fla.)
Hernandez averaged 6.79 digs per set during a 4-0 week and was named the MVP of the Western Conn. St. Classic as the Cardinals posted 3-0 wins over Rhode Island Col. and Babson and 3-1 victories against Vassar and Western Conn. St. She received 111 serves during the week and committed just five errors. She also added in five aces and seven assists.

Cristy Meier, Amherst
(Sophomore, OH - San Anselmo, Calif.)
Meier led the Jeffs to a 2-1 week, averaging 4.75 kills, 1.25 digs, and 0.5 blocks per set while hitting at a .376 rate. Against Wesleyan on Saturday, Amherst rallied from a two-set deficit behind 27 kills, nine digs, four blocks and a .442 hitting percentage from Meier in a 3-2 victory. Earlier in the week, Meier had a match-high 19 kills against Westfield St. during a 3-0 Amherst win.
   
Jane Handel, Middlebury
(Sophomore, OH - Evanston, Ill.)
Handel helped the Panthers post a 3-0 week in NESCAC play as she averaged 3.64 kills, 3.0 digs, and 0.45 blocks per set along with a .327 hitting percentage. She posted back-to-back double-doubles in 3-1 wins against Tufts and Bowdoin, recording 17 kills and 15 digs against the Jumbos on Friday followed by another 17 kills and 16 digs versus the Polar Bears on Saturday.

Rachel Schroff, Connecticut College
(First Year, Setter - Palos Verdes, Calif.)
Schroff averaged 3.0 kills and 1.0 blocks per set while hitting at a .487 rate to help the Camels go 2-1 over the weekend against NESCAC foes. Schroff led Connecticut College to its fifth-straight win on Friday with eight kills and seven blocks in a 3-0 victory against Middlebury. She added 11 kills in a 3-0 setback to Williams on Saturday.

Dena Feiger, Tufts
(Senior, Setter - Long Grove, Ill.)
Feiger was named the MVP of the Tufts Invitational, which the Jumbos won for the third time, and also helped her squad to a five-set victory over UMass Boston on Tuesday, the only team that has defeated Tufts so far this season. For the week, Feiger averaged 10.5 assists and 2.33 digs per set. Against the Beacons on Tuesday, Feiger had 52 assists.
   
Chelsea Kubal, Williams
(Senior, OH - Atherton, Calif.)
Kubal averaged 3.71 kills and 6.3 digs per set with a hitting percentage of .317 during a 3-0 week for the Ephs which included conference victories over Amherst (3-1) and Trinity (3-0). Against the rival Jeffs on Friday evening, Kubal posted a double-double with 17 kills and a team-high 26 digs in the win. She added nine kills and 18 digs against Trinity on Saturday.

Brogie Helgeson, Tufts
(Senior, OH - Santa Cruz, Calif.)
Helgeson was named MVP of the MIT Invitational, as the Jumbos took top honors for the second-straight year by winning four consecutive matches. During a 5-0 overall week, Helgeson averaged 3.24 kills and 2.88 digs per set with a hitting percentage of .278. Against Connecticut College in the semifinals of the MIT Invitational, Helgeson had 15 kills and just two errors. She also contributed four service aces and four blocks overall last week for Tufts.

Danielle Isaman, Trinity
(First Year, OH - West Hartford, Conn.)
Isaman averaged 4.7 kills and 3.0 digs per set while hitting at a rate of .315 as the Bantams went 3-0 last week, including victories over Bates and Colby. Tuesday evening at Eastern Conn. St., Isaman had 13 kills and 11 digs in a 3-0 win. At Bates over the weekend, Isaman had 15 kills and six digs in a 3-0 victory against the host Bobcats on Friday, followed by a 19-kill, 13-dig performance in a 3-1 win over Colby on Saturday.

Kate Anderson, Williams
(Junior, Opposite - Berlin, Mass.)
Anderson averaged 5.0 kills and 3.07 digs per set while hitting at a .335 percent rate as the Ephs went 3-1 at the Brandeis Invitational over the weekend. She had double-digit kills in every match, including a 22-kill performance in a 3-1 win over Trinity on Saturday during which she made only two errors on 47 attempts (.426). Anderson finished the weekend with a total of 70 kills and 43 digs.
