Bowdoin Men, Middlebury Women Take 2001 Cross Country Championships

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's cross-country team and the Middlebury College women's cross-country team were both victorious today in the NESCAC Championship in Brunswick, Maine. The Polar Bear men broke a seven-year stronghold on the championship by Williams College, while the Panther women raced to win their fourth straight NESCAC title.

The Polar Bears dashed to victory in the men's race, placing three of the top nine racers. Stephen Allison (25:03), Todd Forsgren (25:20) and Patrick Vardaro (25:41) finished second, fifth and ninth respectively to pace the team event. Ryan Bak of Trinity College was the men's individual winner with a time of 24:54 overall. The top seven finishers in the race earned First-Team NESCAC honors, including Bak, Allison, Jim Emord (Trinity), Justin Easter (Bates), Forsgren, Aristides Cruz (Tufts) and Jeff Garland (Williams). Bowdoin finished first overall with a team score of 46, while Tufts placed second (76), Trinity third (75) and Williams fourth (77).

The women's race was won by defending national champion Middlebury, who placed four of the top 12 runners to take the title. Michela Adrian (17:50) was fifth, while Jess Mazer (18:04) placed sixth. Molly Yazwinski (18:14) was eighth, and Sarah Logan came in 12th (18:36) for the Panthers. Individual honors were won by Maggie Hanson of Hamilton, who placed first with a time of 17:25. First-Team All-NESCAC honorees included Hanson, Julia Benson and Jenn Campbell (Williams), Maura Danahy (Conn. College), Adrian, Manzer and Jenn Cammarano (Hamilton). Middlebury scored 48 to take first, with Williams (59) second and Amherst (98) placing third overall.
