Tufts Men, Middlebury and Williams Women Take 2004 Cross Country Titles

WATERVILLE, Maine - Tufts University had four runners in the top 10 in winning the men’s team title at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships for the second straight year.

Meanwhile, the women’s race had a first with Williams College and Middlebury College tying for the title with each team recording a score of 59. The tie is the first in the history of the championships --- men or women --- since team titles starting being rewarded in 1983. Middlebury came into the race as the defending champion.

Neal Holtschulte of Williams College defended his men’s championship with a time of 25:20.97 over the 8-kilometer course. Wesleyan’s Weston Fuhrman took second place in 25:29.39 and Stephen Wills of Williams was third with a 25:39.20 finish. Matthew Lacey of Tufts led his team with a 25:40.11 clocking for fourth place and Wesleyan’s Owen Kiely was fifth in 25:42.17.

Williams’ Caroline Cretti won the women’s race in 17:48.15. Middlebury’s Jessica Manzer was second in 17:57.16 and Carter Hamill of Amherst placed third in 17:58.66. Jenn Campbell of Williams was fourth in 18:10.65 and defending women’s champion Shauneen Garrahan of Amherst took fifth in 18:19.36
