Middlebury Wins 2008 NCAA Women's Cross Country Title; Hamilton's Kosgei Takes Men's Individual Title

HANOVER, Ind. - The Middlebury College women's cross country team won its fifth NCAA title with a convincing victory at the championship meet. The Panthers ended the race with 179 points, 59 points ahead of second-place Calvin (237). Williams (240), Wartburg (284) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire (310) rounded out the top five.

Hamilton junior Peter Kosgei (Kapsabet, Kenya) took the men's individual title, completing the 8-kilometer race in a course-record-setting time of 24:22.03.

Cortland St. finished with three runners in the top 10 and totaled 80 points to outdistance 12-time champion North Central College (Ill.). The Cardinals finished second out of 32 squads with 115 points. Williams College was third with 129 points.

For Middlebury, senior Alexandra Krieg, who earned a top 10 finish for the third straight year, led the Panthers in sixth place with a time of 21:14, 21 seconds off the winning pace. Sophomore Hannah Meier finished the race in 39th place (21:52) for the Panthers.

Behind Krieg and Meier were a pack of three rookies, who won a title in their first fall on campus. Elise Moody-Roberts came in 57th place (22:04) in the 279-woman race, followed by Claire McIlvennie in 78th place (22:16). Margo Kramer was next for the Panthers in 98th place (22:29) overall, to round out Middlebury's scorers.

First-year racer Cate Brown came in 116th (22:37) for Middlebury, while sophomore Sophia Spring rounded out the squad with a 153rd place finish (22:54).

Bethel University (Minn.) junior Marie Borner earned the women's individual championship with a time of 20:43.91. Amherst senior Elise Tropiano (Plainview, N.Y.) was second overall in 20:52.96.

Other NESCAC runners competing as individuals in the championship included Tufts sophomore Stephanie McNamara, who came in 11th in a time of 21:24.91. Bowdoin senior Anne Monjar was 18th in 21:31, while McNamara's teammate, classmate Amy Wilfert, was 48th in 22:01.00. Wesleyan junior Ravenna Neville came in 52nd in a time of 22:02.92, and senior teammate Liz Wheatley placed 101st in 22:30.10.

On the men's side, Williams senior Edgar Kosgey was the next-highest NESCAC runner to Kosgei, placing 10th in 24:46.27. Senior Same Moorhead of Trinity was 16th in 24:48.38, while Bowdoin junior Thompson Ogilvie was right behind in 17th in 24:48.81. Tufts junior Jesse Faller was 35th in 24:59.89, and Connecticut College senior Brian Murtagh came in 38th in 25:01.61.
