Williams' Del Piccolo Wins NCAA Women's Cross Country Title

WINNECONNE, Wis. - Williams' Chiara Del Piccolo (Basalt, Colo.)
took individual honors at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on
Saturday, as the sophomore traversed the 6-kilometer course at Lake
Breese Golf Club in a time of 20:52.08.
Del Piccolo, who finished just over five seconds ahead of the runner-up, became the first NESCAC runner to win the women's individual title since former Eph Jessica Caley did so in 1995.
Del Piccolo was one of four NESCAC harriers to finish among the top 10 at the annual national championship. Senior Margo Cramer took fifth with a time of 21:05.97, almost two seconds better than junior teammate Addie Tousley (21:07.41), who came in sixth. Junior Keri Lambert of Amherst finished the day in eighth place in a time of 21:12.68.
Middlebury College was denied a second-straight NCAA women's title by first-time champion Washinton University of St. Louis. The Bears posted a score of 70 for a 41-point victory over the Panthers. Williams came in third (153) while Amherst was 11th (373) and Tufts took 20th (497).
On the men's side, the Ephs paced the conference with a score of 278, coming in sixth. Williams was one of three NESCAC squads to finish in the top 10, as the conference champion Ephs were joined by Bates in seventh (294) and Tufts in ninth (329). Middlebury took 13th (372) while Bowdoin was 15th (401).
Among the men's individual field, Bowodin sophomore Coby Horowitz paced the harriers from the league by coming in 13th out of 279 with a time of 24:30.55, roughly 46 seconds behind the winning time for the 8-kilometer course. Junior Matt Rand of Tufts claimed 19th (24:36.12), and Middlebury senior Michael Schmidt (24:38.70) edged Bates sophomore Tully Hannan (24:39.12) by half a second for 26th.
The championship was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
