AMHERST, Mass. - Williams College swept the 2011 NESCAC Cross
Country Championships today at Amherst College. The Eph women won
their 12th overall title and first outright crown since 2005 after
sharing the championship in 2008. The Williams men's squad claimed
its fifth title in the last six years.
The day began with the women's race at 11:00 a.m. Amherst senior Keri Lambert led for the opening half of the race before Williams sophomore Chiara Del Piccolo took over just after the midway point and finished strong as she completed the 6-kilometer course in 21:58. Del Piccolo led a contingent of four Eph runners among the top 10.
Behind first-place Williams was 2010 NESCAC champ Middlebury. The Panthers posted a team score of 42, just eight points behind the Ephs' 34. Host Amherst finished third (105), while Tufts was fourth (126).
On the men's side, Middlebury senior Michael Schmidt became the second Panther in meet history to win the conference championship, joining Mike Graham, who also won at Amherst in 1983. Schmidt, who traversed much of the 8-kilometer course with only one shoe, came in at 25:51, exactly 20 seconds ahead of Bowdoin's Coby Horowitz.
Williams took the 2011 conference crown with a score of 49 points. It was the 13th NESCAC title for the Ephs. Behind Williams was Bates and Bowdoin, who both tied for second with 79 points. Middlebury was fourth with 94 points.
