HADLEY, Mass. – NESCAC institutions will be participating in a conference-wide mental health awareness week, April 8-14. The initiative, developed by NESCAC SAAC, aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and promote resources available on each campus through a social media campaign, using the hashtag #NESCACares. Institutions will also be engaging in a variety of events and programming throughout the week.
NESCAC SAAC is using its voice to contribute to the conversation. Veronica Rocco, a member of the Amherst College women’s cross country and track & field teams and the NESCAC SAAC Executive Board stated, “NESCAC SAAC felt that making mental health and well-being a conference-wide focus was an important initiative to undertake. Mental health is something that affects so many, and we felt that we could use our platform to bring more awareness to the importance of seeking help, and that it is a sign of strength rather than weakness.”
“Division III institutions have identified mental health and well-being as a top priority,” said NESCAC Executive Director Andrea Savage. “I am very proud of our student-athletes for spearheading this initiative and working together to increase awareness and education on such an important issue.”
Events scheduled to take place throughout the week on campuses include wellness and self-care classes, seminars, and speakers. Athletic departments will work with other campus groups to provide a broad array of resources and education to all students and staff.
